Perplexity has opened up free access to its in-house browser, Comet, which was previously exclusive to users of its $200-a-month Max plan.

First unveiled in July 2025, Comet stands out for its deep integration with Perplexity’s AI search engine and the built-in Comet Assistant. The assistant can:

  • answer questions about website and video content,
  • summarize emails and calendar events,
  • manage browser tabs,
  • and even navigate the web on the user’s behalf.

Starting today, anyone can download Comet for Windows or macOS directly from Perplexity’s official site.

Premium subscribers won’t lose their perks: they’ll continue to get access to higher-performance AI models, along with early trials of experimental features. Among them is a “background assistant” that can quietly juggle multiple tasks in hidden mode, with controls accessible through a dedicated panel.
