OpenAI reveals ChatGPT usage stats for the first time

OpenAI has officially shared detailed usage statistics for ChatGPT, its flagship AI product. According to the company, the chatbot now handles more than 2.5 billion prompts per day.

Roughly 330 million of those daily requests come from users in the United States, making it OpenAI’s largest market. The platform has also seen strong user growth, with weekly active users increasing from 300 million in December 2024 to over 500 million by March 2025.

While ChatGPT still falls short of Google’s scale, with the search engine processing an estimated 5 trillion queries annually, experts say OpenAI’s growth trajectory could pose a serious threat to Google’s dominance in search.

There are broader implications as well. According to Reuters, OpenAI is working on an AI-powered web browser, a move that could directly challenge not just Google Search, but also Google Chrome. In the lead-up, OpenAI has already launched its ChatGPT Agent, a task-performing assistant capable of handling everything from reservations to drafting emails — signaling the company’s ambitions to go beyond traditional chatbot use.
