OpenAI has introduced a general AI agent within ChatGPT designed to perform tasks on behalf of the user.

According to the company, the agent is capable of handling even complex requests — such as checking your calendar and reminding you of upcoming meetings, planning a Japanese-style lunch and ordering ingredients, analyzing a competitor’s product, and creating a presentation based on the findings.

The new agent is built on a unified system that brings together OpenAI’s previous breakthroughs:

  • ChatGPT’s ability to synthesize information from websites;
  • Deep research capabilities;
  • Advanced reasoning skills.

TechCrunch describes the launch as OpenAI’s bold move to turn AI into a true " agentic product" — one that doesn’t just answer questions, but genuinely takes work off your plate. Google and Perplexity have both introduced their own agents, but neither has yet demonstrated the ability to tackle complex tasks at this level.

The feature is rolling out gradually and will soon be available to all paid ChatGPT subscribers. Message limits are set at 400 per month for the Pro plan, 40 for Plus, and 30 credits for Team. To enable the agent, users can switch to “agent mode” via the tools menu.
