OpenAI has announced that it will offer a free one-year subscription to its ChatGPT Go plan for users in India. The promotion begins on November 4 and applies to both new and existing subscribers.
The company hasn’t specified how long the offer will remain available, only that it will be for a limited time. In India, ChatGPT Go costs under $5 per month and provides higher usage limits for text and image generation, file uploads, and extended memory for personalization.
India has become one of OpenAI’s key markets, with around 1 billion internet users and over 700 million smartphone owners. The company recently opened an office in New Delhi and is expanding its local hiring. According to CEO Sam Altman, India is now OpenAI’s second-largest market after the U.S., though monetization remains challenging — the ChatGPT app generated just $3.6 million in revenue from 29 million installs over the summer quarter.
Analysts say the free subscription move is aimed at strengthening OpenAI’s foothold in the fast-growing Indian market, where competition is heating up. Telecom operator Airtel offers its users free access to Perplexity Pro 360, while students can claim a one-year Google AI Pro subscription at no cost.
OpenAI will also host its DevDay Exchange conference in Bangalore on November 4, where the company is expected to unveil new tools and initiatives tailored for India’s tech ecosystem.
