Lego, in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA), has created Lego bricks from meteorite dust. These unique pieces are now on display at select Lego stores, including the 5th Avenue branch in Manhattan, until September 20.
The project demonstrates the potential of using moondust, or lunar regolith, as a building material for lunar structures. This approach could significantly reduce the cost and energy required to transport building materials from Earth to the Moon. ESA scientists recreated lunar regolith by grinding up an ancient meteorite, which was then used to 3D print the Lego pieces.
ESA Science Officer Aidan Cowley noted the value of experimenting with these "space bricks" to explore various designs and building techniques for future lunar habitats. This initiative comes as humanity prepares for the possibility of establishing a permanent lunar base, with NASA and international partners aiming for the 2030s.
