Named the Huawei Lianqiu Lake R&D Center, this facility is larger than Apple Park and Microsoft's Redmond Campus combined.
The $1.4 billion center, located 30 miles west-southwest of central Shanghai, consolidates Huawei's research and development efforts across multiple areas, including HiSilicon, 5G-A/6G wireless technologies, smartphones, automobiles, and digital energy research.
The center features over 40,000 offices and is divided into eight districts connected by roads, trains, and elevated overpasses.
Construction began in September 2021 and took over three years to complete. Huawei CEO Ren Zhengfei cited the Chicago Lakeside Complex as inspiration and highlighted the center's attractive environment for the hundreds of foreign scientists working there.
By centralizing its R&D operations, Huawei aims to streamline collaboration and bolster its technological advancements, especially in light of U.S. sanctions impacting the company.
