OpenAI has introduced GPT-6.1 Terra, a model for everyday computer work with API prices 50% below those of GPT-6.1 Sol and the previous GPT-5.6 Terra.
The model combines visual understanding with the ability to operate software, handling tasks such as reading invoices and entering their details into accounting systems. OpenAI also lists drafting proposals, interpreting technical drawings, filling out forms and editing video among its uses.
In OpenAI’s Agents’ Last Exam evaluation, Terra matched GPT-6 Astra’s performance at one-tenth the price per token. The benchmark covers professional tasks such as turning architectural drawings into 3D models and reviewing footage to produce a detailed log. OpenAI says Terra completed tasks more than three times faster than Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.
Against its predecessor, Terra scored 15 percentage points higher at medium reasoning effort, at roughly one-third the cost per task. These are OpenAI’s reported results.
The price difference is substantial for developers running repeated tasks. Standard API rates are $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens, compared with $2 and $10 for GPT-6.1 Sol.
| Model | Input / 1M tokens | Output / 1M tokens |
|---|---|---|
| GPT-6.1 Terra | $1 | $5 |
| GPT-6.1 Sol | $2 | $10 |
| GPT-6 Astra | $10 | $50 |
The standard rates apply to prompts of up to 272,000 input tokens, with higher charges above that threshold. Terra’s cached input costs $0.05 per million tokens.
Coding performance has also improved. At maximum reasoning effort, Terra solved 50.3% of Terminal-Bench 4.0 tasks, up from 21.5% for GPT-5.6 Terra. OpenAI nevertheless recommends Sol and Astra for the most complex coding work.
Terra accepts text and images, produces text and supports a context window of 1.05 million tokens. Developers can choose how much reasoning it performs, from none to maximum, depending on the task.
GPT-6.1 Terra is available in ChatGPT Work and Codex for Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users, and through the API under the name gpt-6.1-terra.
