Elon Musk believes that within five years, artificial intelligence will surpass the combined intelligence of humanity.
Speaking at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Musk said that AI could outperform individual human intelligence as early as the end of 2026 and go on to exceed humanity’s collective intelligence within the next five years.
The billionaire entrepreneur, creator of the Grok neural network and co-founder of Neuralink and OpenAI, added that the pace of AI development is accelerating faster than most people expect.
"I don't know what's going to happen in 10 years, but the rate at which AI is progressing, I think we might have AI that is smarter than any human by the end of this year. I would say no later than next year, probably by 2030 or 2031, call it 5 years from now, AI will be smarter than all of humanity collectively."
Earlier, TIME named its 2025 “Person of the Year,” awarding the title to a group of technology leaders dubbed “The Architects of AI,” which includes Musk.
