Elon Musk has announced plans to create an alternative to Wikipedia — an encyclopedia built on his company xAI’s chatbot, Grok. The project already has a working name: Grokipedia.

According to Musk, Grokipedia would serve as a global knowledge base designed to reduce what he sees as inaccuracies and editorial bias in existing platforms. Content would be generated through Grok’s algorithms, which analyze online sources, flag inconsistencies, and compile a refined version of the information.

Wikipedia has a lot of great content, but it’s not free of errors or bias. Grok can help clean that up.

His idea didn’t come out of nowhere. Musk has repeatedly criticized Wikipedia for what he calls factual manipulation, including details about his own biography. He has long argued that the site should emphasize his executive roles at companies over his investments.

His skepticism toward Wikipedia is nothing new. In 2022, he pointed out that the definition of “recession” had been edited 180 times in one week. In 2023, he publicly sparred with Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales over the platform’s neutrality and transparency.

Today, Musk claims Grok can already flag major inconsistencies across open sources. Over time, these “synthetic corrections” are expected to form the foundation of Grokipedia.
