Apple is exploring the idea of releasing a square, clamshell-style foldable iPhone, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported in his latest Power On newsletter.
According to Gurman, the device would compete with smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 and the Motorola Razr, meaning it would fold vertically in a classic flip-phone form factor.
The appearance of such a device is “far from guaranteed,” Gurman notes. However, he believes an Apple-branded Flip could arrive sometime after the company’s first foldable iPhone — a book-style device expected to fold similarly to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7.
Still, Apple is betting that its first foldable iPhone will be successful enough to generate real demand for the category and that customers will want additional shapes and sizes, much as they have with traditional slab-style iPhones.
Earlier reports in January 2026 suggested that Apple plans to unveil its first foldable smartphone in September. The information came from industry insiders citing sources within Apple’s supply chain.
