Apple is currently producing only a few hundred units of its first foldable iPhone per day, putting production well behind the company’s original plans for 2026, according to Nikkei Asia.

Apple had initially planned to make between 8 million and 10 million foldable iPhones this year, but current output remains far below the level required to reach that target.

Quality control has reportedly been one of the main reasons for the delay. Apple has set particularly high durability standards for the device compared with competing foldables, with engineers paying close attention to the hinge and its ability to withstand prolonged use.

The company carried out an additional evaluation of the foldable iPhone in August to determine whether it was ready for mass production. The review pushed full-scale assembly back by several weeks.

Apple and its suppliers are now working to increase production from a few hundred units to several thousand devices per day. Unless output rises quickly, the foldable iPhone could be in short supply when sales begin.

The device could make its debut at Apple’s annual hardware event on September 9, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Apple has been working on a foldable iPhone for years, with reports about the project dating back to at least 2024.
