Amazon has developed a new design for its delivery drone. It is smaller in size, makes less noise and can fly in the rain.
The company has been developing the drone for a decade, trying to realize founder Jeff Bezos' ideas about autonomous drones capable of delivering a package weighing less than 5 pounds in as little as 30 minutes after a customer places an order.
The new drone, dubbed the MK30, will replace the existing MK27-2, which will be used this year for deliveries in Lockford, California, and College Station, Texas.
According to Amazon, the new vehicle is capable of covering greater distances, can fly in a wider range of temperatures and has new safety features.
The new drone will begin use in 2024, although it is not known when the Federal Aviation Administration will approve commercial drone deliveries. For now, companies are allowed to carry out test flights in increasingly populated areas as long as they do not pose a significant safety risk.
