This would reduce the size of the camera bump on a smartphone.

LG Innotek, a division of LG, has developed a periscope-style true optical zoom camera module with a 4-9 times telephoto range for smartphones. Most smartphone cameras currently use hybrid zoom setups that combine digital zoom and multiple camera modules, which can reduce the sensor resolution and detail.

The new "Optical Zoom Camera" module, however, contains a zoom actuator with movable components, similar to those found on a zoom lens in a mirrorless or DSLR camera. It operates quickly and precisely while also saving battery life and has a built-in optical image stabilizer to reduce blur.

The module will be integrated into the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform and is expected to appear in smartphones announced at CES 2023, including the OnePlus 11 series, Xiaomi 13, Motorola X40, and Oppo Find X. Apple is also rumored to potentially use the zoom module in its iPhone 15 series.
