X launches audio and video calls, moving closer to becoming the "everything app"

X, formerly known as Twitter, has officially rolled out audio and video calls.

The company has introduced this functionality, with several users receiving notifications stating, "Audio and video calls are here!" when opening the app. Additionally, a new "Enable audio and video calling" toggle has appeared in the app's settings, allowing users to specify who they are comfortable receiving calls from.

The options include allowing calls from people in your address book, those you follow, verified users, or any combination of these. To initiate a call, users can open a direct message with another user, select the phone icon in the top right corner, and choose between audio or video calls.

X owner Elon Musk has long hinted at adding audio and video calls as part of his vision to transform the platform into an "everything app." He stated that this feature would be available on iOS, Android, Mac, and PC, with no phone number required.

However, it's unclear how widely X has deployed audio and video calls and whether non-Premium users can access it. There were previous indications that users might need to sign up for X's Premium subscription to use this feature.

Musk has also suggested the possibility of charging all users a yearly fee to access the platform, a strategy that has already been implemented with users in New Zealand and the Philippines, where they are charged $1 per year.
