Sony hints at a more portable future for PlayStation

Sony Interactive Entertainment President Hideaki Nishino has hinted that future PlayStation consoles could become more portable, drawing comparisons to the direction popularized by the Nintendo Switch.

In an interview with Japanese magazine Famitsu marking its 40th anniversary, Nishino reaffirmed Sony's commitment to dedicated gaming hardware, saying the company has no plans to move away from consoles.

He also suggested that portability will play a bigger role in PlayStation's future. According to Nishino, Sony wants players to be able to enjoy games comfortably in more places than just the living room, using technologies that can adapt to different form factors. The company has already taken steps in that direction with the PlayStation Portal, which streams games from a PlayStation console to a handheld device. While Nishino stopped short of announcing a new portable PlayStation, his comments have fueled fresh speculation that Sony is working on one.

Nishino also highlighted cloud streaming as an important part of portable gaming and shared updated usage figures for PlayStation Portal. According to him, the device's user base in January 2026 was about 1.5 times larger than it had been in December 2025.

Portable gaming is not new territory for Sony. The company previously released the PSP, PS Vita, the PSone LCD screen accessory, PlayStation VR, and, most recently, the PlayStation Portal.
