RedMagic Astra 2 matches ROG Xbox Ally X gaming performance

The RedMagic Astra 2 gaming tablet has shown performance comparable to the ROG Xbox Ally X in gaming tests conducted by YouTuber Dame Tech.

Here are the results:

  • In GTA V at 720p with Very High settings, the tablet maintained more than 70 fps for most of the session — nearly matching the ROG Xbox Ally X.
  • In Red Dead Redemption 2 at 720p with High settings, Astra 2 initially outperformed the Ally X while consuming significantly less power. According to the performance overlay, the tablet used around 20W compared with about 40W on the handheld console. However, longer testing revealed thermal throttling, and by the end of the session Astra 2 slightly fell behind.

Notebookcheck noted that the tablet's temperature stayed above 100°C throughout the test, which could become an issue during extended gaming sessions. However, this remains within the processor's operating limits.

Both games were running on Astra 2 through a Windows emulator for Android rather than natively, meaning performance could be even better with native support.

The RedMagic Astra 2 features a 9.06-inch OLED display with a 2400×1504 resolution, up to 185Hz refresh rate, and 1,600 nits peak brightness. It is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip alongside RedMagic's custom RedCore R4 gaming processor.

The tablet also includes a visible liquid cooling system with a pump behind its transparent rear panel, an 8,300mAh battery, and 75W fast charging through dual USB-C ports. It runs RedMagic OS 11.5 based on Android 16.

The Astra 2 will launch globally on August 26. The version with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage will cost $699, while the 16GB RAM and 512GB storage model will be priced at $799.
