OpenAI may sue Apple over weak ChatGPT integration

OpenAI is considering legal action against Apple over what it views as an insufficiently deep integration of ChatGPT into Apple's ecosystem and a lack of meaningful promotion of the AI assistant, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports.
The two companies signed a partnership agreement in 2024 that brought ChatGPT into Siri, as well as Image Playground in iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. However, OpenAI had reportedly expected a much deeper integration and a more prominent role for ChatGPT inside Siri itself.
OpenAI executives also believe Apple has done little to actively promote the integration. The company originally anticipated that the deal could generate billions of dollars in annual subscription revenue, but that outcome "hasn't come close to happening."
"They basically said, 'OpenAI needs to take a leap of faith and trust us,'" an unnamed OpenAI executive told Bloomberg. The source described the deal as a "failure." "We have done everything from a product perspective," the executive said. "They have not, and worse, they haven't even made an honest effort."
OpenAI's attempts to renegotiate the terms of the agreement have so far gone nowhere. The company is now weighing several options, including sending Apple a formal notice of breach of contract without immediately filing a full lawsuit. OpenAI still reportedly hopes to resolve the dispute out of court.
