Microsoft unveils Project Zenith, a ready-to-code Windows setup for developers

Microsoft has introduced Project Zenith, a Windows 11 configuration designed to ship ready for software development and running AI models locally.

Zenith is not a separate Windows edition like Home or Pro. It is a preconfigured software setup tied to high-end hardware that OEM partners will install on new developer PCs. The goal is to let users start working almost immediately after turning on a new machine, without spending time installing tools or reconfiguring the system.

The hardware requirements are demanding, with at least 64GB of unified memory and 250GB/s of memory bandwidth. Microsoft says that is enough to run 30B+ parameter models locally and without metered usage, removing the need to rely on cloud services or pay per token. The first supported platform will be AMD Ryzen AI Halo, with more processor and PC makers expected to follow.

The desktop environment is also configured around development work. Visual Studio Code, GitHub Copilot, PowerToys and other tools come preinstalled, while Windows Terminal and VS Code are pinned to the taskbar. File Explorer shows file extensions and hidden files by default, long path support is enabled, and some Start menu tips and recommendations are turned off. WSL also plays a central role by giving developers access to Linux inside Windows, with Microsoft having open-sourced the subsystem last year.

Most of Zenith’s software changes do not require dedicated hardware and are already available, or gradually rolling out, in standard Windows 11. The project mainly brings together features Microsoft introduced at Build 2026, while pairing them with hardware capable of running large AI models locally. Microsoft has not announced pricing or exact launch dates yet, but partner devices are expected in the coming months.
