MacBook Neo’s 8GB memory could put its SSD under heavy strain

The base MacBook Neo with 8GB of unified memory may subject its built-in SSD to unusually high write volumes when macOS relies heavily on swap, according to testing by UFD Tech.
The issue stems from what happens when the Mac runs short of available memory. macOS compresses data in RAM and moves some of it to the SSD, using the drive as swap space. During UFD Tech’s test, a relatively ordinary workload involving several browser tabs, Discord and WhatsApp resulted in roughly 900GB of writes in three hours, with no memory pressure warning shown to the user.
UFD Tech then stress-tested the 256GB SSD and estimated its write endurance at around 400 to 420TB. If the drive were subjected continuously to the same unusually intensive write activity, it could theoretically reach that limit after about 1,400 hours, or 58 days of nonstop use. The estimate does not mean the SSD should be expected to fail after 58 days of normal ownership, but it illustrates how sustained swapping could accelerate wear on the base configuration.
The 512GB version has substantially more estimated endurance at around 1.5PB, or 1,500TB of writes. Under an equivalent workload, UFD Tech calculates that it could last for more than 5,000 hours, giving the larger drive roughly two to three times as much headroom.
That matters because the MacBook Neo’s SSD is soldered to the logic board rather than designed as a user-replaceable component. A storage failure therefore presents a more serious repair problem than it would on a machine with removable storage. Apple does not publish official write-endurance figures for its Mac SSDs, so the lifespan estimates remain based on UFD Tech’s testing rather than Apple specifications.
