Google launches Gemini app for Windows

Google has released an official Gemini desktop app for Windows PCs.

The main new feature is a system-wide shortcut that brings up Gemini over whatever is currently on screen. Pressing Alt + Space lets users open the assistant without going through a browser, although for now it launches the full Gemini app. On macOS, where the desktop app arrived in April, the same shortcut opens a smaller floating input bar instead.

The Windows app includes the full Gemini interface, with a sidebar for notebooks and conversation history, along with integrations across Google Workspace. Unlike the macOS version, it also supports Gems, Google’s custom Gemini assistants.

Google says the desktop app will also support Gemini Spark, its autonomous AI agent for multi-step tasks, as well as built-in tools for generating images and creating videos.

The company says the app is designed to run efficiently in the background without adding much overhead or slowing down the system. Google plans to add more Windows-specific features over time.
