Google is finally replacing Assistant with Gemini on Android

Google will begin shutting down Google Assistant on Android smartphones and tablets starting September 4, 2026, replacing it with its AI-powered assistant, Gemini, 9to5Google reports, citing the company.

The rollout will take several weeks. Once complete, users will no longer be able to launch the classic Google Assistant or switch back to it on supported smartphones, tablets or connected devices.

The change will also affect Wear OS smartwatches, wireless earbuds and Android Auto. The main exception is vehicles with Google Assistant built in, where the assistant will continue to work after September 4.

Google has not announced changes for other devices yet, but says Gemini will eventually come to Google TV, Google Home speakers and smart displays. The company has not said when Gemini will replace Assistant on the Pixel Tablet in dock mode.

Google has been preparing the transition for more than a year. The company originally planned to phase out Assistant by the end of 2025 before delaying the move to 2026. For now, users can still switch back to Google Assistant from within the Gemini app before the rollout begins.
