Apple releases iOS 26.6: What's new

Apple has released iOS 26.6 for iPhone, introducing a series of under-the-hood improvements, security fixes, and preparations for this fall's iOS 27 update.

Here's what's new.

Preparing for iOS 27

The biggest change in iOS 26.6 happens behind the scenes. Apple has optimized the Spotlight index ahead of iOS 27, which will introduce upgraded versions of Spotlight and Siri.

Those features require the iPhone to reindex its content, a process that beta testers reported could take more than a week. By performing part of the work in advance, Apple aims to make upgrading to iOS 27 significantly smoother.

New warning for blocked contacts

iOS has long imposed a limit on the number of blocked contacts, but previously gave no explanation when users reached it.

As first spotted by 9to5Mac, iOS 26.6 now displays a "Blocked Contacts Limit Reached" warning, prompting users to remove an existing blocked contact before adding another.

Phone theft protection isn't live yet

The iOS 26.6 code also contains references to a new anti-theft feature that would automatically lock an unlocked iPhone if it is suddenly snatched from the user's hand.

The feature is not enabled in the public release, suggesting Apple may activate it in a future update.

More than 75 security fixes

According to Apple's security notes, iOS 26.6 and iPadOS 26.6 address 78 vulnerabilities associated with 87 CVE entries. Among them are:

  • A MediaRemote vulnerability that could allow an app to obtain root privileges.
  • An AVEVideoEncoder flaw that could enable arbitrary code execution with kernel privileges.
  • Security issues in Game Center and libc that could allow a malicious app to escape the iOS sandbox.
  • A Wi-Fi vulnerability that could allow a nearby attacker to corrupt process memory.

Apple has not disclosed whether any of these vulnerabilities were exploited before the fixes were released.

The update also includes an enterprise fix that resolves an issue where the DisableAssociationMACRandomization policy failed to prevent users from manually changing the Private Wi-Fi Address setting to Fixed or Rotating.
