Apple reportedly rushed new Mac mini and Mac Studio models to meet AI hardware demand

Apple launched its new Mac mini and Mac Studio earlier than usual after stronger-than-expected demand for hardware capable of running AI models locally, The Information reports.

Apple typically refreshes its desktop Macs in October or November, but this year the new machines arrived even before the company’s annual iPhone event. The Mac Studio launch put particular emphasis on linking multiple machines together to run advanced AI models locally, a setup aimed primarily at businesses and developers rather than everyday Mac users.

According to The Information, Apple wasn’t fully prepared for the level of demand. The company had no dedicated engineering team to work with enterprise customers and no clear strategy for selling Macs as AI hardware. Interest also surged during a global memory shortage, leaving high-end Mac mini and Mac Studio configurations backordered for months and pushing some customers toward alternatives such as Nvidia’s DGX Spark.
