Apple is reportedly preparing AirPods with built-in cameras for a 2027 launch

Apple is reportedly working on a new generation of AirPods that will include built-in cameras, with a launch scheduled for 2027. The plans were outlined by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, citing people familiar with Apple's roadmap.

The cameras will rely on infrared sensors rather than a traditional photo setup. Codenamed B798, the device was originally planned for 2026 but was pushed back as Apple worked through delays with its AI software.

Apple’s new Siri is finally useful — and iOS 27 offers clues about future devices
The new version of Siri and the latest Apple Intelligence features are finally good enough to lift Apple out of one of the most damaging product and reputation setbacks of the past decade, even if they arrived nearly two years late.

The cameras are expected to play a central role in expanding what Siri can do. By feeding visual information from the AirPods into the assistant, Apple plans to let users ask Siri questions about whatever is in front of them. Bloomberg gives the example of someone asking Siri what to cook for dinner based on the ingredients on the counter. The feature is expected to rely on Apple's Visual Intelligence system, which analyzes images and surfaces context based on what the camera sees.

The new earbuds are expected to closely resemble the current AirPods Pro, with the main visible difference being small cameras embedded in the stems. Bloomberg also reports that the device will include external lights to indicate when data is being sent to the cloud for processing.

The camera-equipped AirPods are expected to launch alongside Apple's second-generation foldable iPhone and a redesigned model marking the 20th anniversary of the original iPhone. Apple has not commented on the report.
